After displaying the beautiful, unopened box on my shelf for six months (seriously) I finally ripped into it today and it moved me to write this review.
The Box:
The artwork is spectacular, with an image of Captain Dallas peering intensely through his helmet. I like it so much, in fact, I may send an unopened box in for professional grading and an acrylic case.
The Figure:
Details are exceptional, down to the flexible power cord that you plug in from the helmet to the backpack. All limbs articulate and the clothing is life-like – flexible and sort of squishy like I imagine a space suit to be.
The LEDs:
No advertisement or print on the box mentions the LEDs, but they’re one of the best parts! There’s a dual-LED light beam on the top of the helmet, and multi-colored LEDs inside the helmet which give his face an eerie glow. The backpack has a row of four LEDs as well (on a separate switch).
The flashlight he holds looks so real – down to the recessed light bulb – that I thought it might light up as well (it doesn’t, but looks amazing nonetheless).
The Assembly:
There’s not much to assemble here – just the gloved hands, booted feet, and helmet. It is much harder than it sounds if you’re trying to cause minimal damage to your expensive action figure. The boots require some effort to click into place, but the gloves (my god) after wrenching and forcing them for 10 minutes, I realized I had to bore larger holes! That did the trick.
The helmet is a different story. A kid could probably force the thing on in 5 seconds, but a COLLECTOR who doesn’t want to grind the face off of his prized character faces a challenge. In fact, there is NO WAY to put the helmet on without either marring the face of poor Dallas, or (what I did) removing the air hose. The hose, quite simply, prevents careful assembly.
It’s ironic to me that the manufacturing and packaging are so intricate, delicate, and precise, only to require intense gripping, bending, forcing, and jamming to put the thing together!
The Summary:
I almost reduced the rating by a star because assembly is so unnecessarily tedious, but I decided to give it the full five because the finished product is absolutely gorgeous – one of the greatest “action figures” I have ever seen.
